When will the sun die?
If y'all worry nigh when the sun will die, never fright: that moment is billions of years away.
The sun gives energy to life on Earth, and without this star, we wouldn't exist here. Merely even stars have limited lifetimes, and someday our sun volition die.
You don't need to worry about this solar death anytime shortly, though. Similar all stars, a churning fusion engine fuels the sunday, and it even so has a lot of fuel left — about v billion years' worth.

Why will the sun die?
Stars similar our sun course when a huge cloud of gas (by and large hydrogen and helium) grows so large that information technology collapses nether its own weight. But in about 5 billion years, the sun will run out of hydrogen. Our star is currently in the most stable phase of its life bike and has been since the germination of our solar organisation, about 4.five billion years ago. Once all the hydrogen gets used upwards, the sun will abound out of this stable phase.
What will happen when the sun dies?
With no hydrogen left to fuse in the cadre, a shell of fusion hydrogen volition form around the helium-filled core, astrophysicist Jillian Scudder wrote in an article for The Conversation. Gravitational forces volition take over, compressing the core and allowing the residue of the lord's day to expand.
Our star volition grow to be larger than we can imagine — and so big that it volition envelope the inner planets, including Earth. That's when the sun will become a red giant, which it volition remain for about a billion years.
So, the hydrogen in that outer core will deplete, leaving an abundance of helium. That element will then fuse into heavier elements, similar oxygen and carbon, in reactions that don't emit as much energy. Once all the helium disappears, the forces of gravity will take over, and the dominicus will shrink into a white dwarf. All the outer cloth will dissipate, leaving behind a planetary nebula.
"When a star dies, it ejects a mass of gas and dust — known as its envelope — into space. The envelope can exist equally much as half the star's mass," astronomer Albert Zijlstra of the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, said in a argument. "This reveals the star'south core, which by this signal in the star's life is running out of fuel, somewhen turning off and before finally dying."
Astronomers judge that the sun has about vii billion to eight billion years left before it sputters out and dies. One way or another, humanity may well be long gone by so.
No supernova, no blackness pigsty
Our sun isn't massive enough to trigger a stellar explosion, chosen a supernova, when it dies, and it will never go a black pigsty either.
In order to create a supernova, a star needs about x times the mass of our sun. An object of that size would form a dumbo stellar corpse called a neutron star after the explosion.
To get out backside a blackness hole, a supernova must occur in a star with about 20 times the mass of the sunday.
